Holy Cross Mens Basketball

Dave Metzendorf

Assistant Coach

David Metzendorf is in his third year on the men’s basketball staff at the College of the Holy Cross in 2018-2019, and his first season as an assistant coach. Metzendorf’s duties include all aspects of recruiting, player development, game planning and opponent scouting.

During his first two years at Holy Cross, Metzendorf served as the Crusaders’ director of men’s basketball operations in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. His primary responsibilities included directing all recruiting efforts, organizing team travel, running summer camps and overseeing a team of student managers. In addition, he handled film breakdown and assisted with team preparation in the forms of advanced scouting, game strategy and player development planning.

Metzendorf came to Holy Cross after spending three years on the staff at Cornell University. He served as an assistant coach for the Big Red for his final two seasons and was instrumental in the school’s recruiting efforts, after his first year as a special assistant to the head coach. During the 2015-2016 season, Metzendorf coached Cornell’s backcourt, which included two of the Ivy League’s top three scorers in Matt Morgan (18.9 points per game) and Robert Hatter (17.1 points per game), with Morgan breaking the Ivy League single-season record for points scored by a freshman and earning All-Ivy League honors.

In 2014-2015, as one of the youngest Division I assistant coaches in the nation, Metzendorf helped Cornell to an 11-game improvement over the previous year, the biggest turnaround in the program’s history. During that season, he aided in the development of All-Ivy League selection Shonn Miller (the 13th overall selection in the NBA G League draft) and Devin Cherry (who went on to play professionally in Denmark). The Big Red also ranked among the top defensive teams in the nation, leading the Ivy League and standing 18th in Division I in field goal percentage defense. During the 2013-2014 season, Metzendorf was responsible for numerous behind-the-scenes tasks for Cornell, including acting as film coordinator and handling team travel.

Metzendorf earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Ithaca College in 2013, where he received the Dean’s Award and Professional Excellence Award. During his time as an undergraduate, he served as a student manager at Cornell for one year and as a student assistant for two seasons. Metzendorf also interned for the University of Michigan basketball program under John Beilein and worked for the Hoop Group elite basketball camps in the summers. He received his master’s degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth in 2015.
